Prosthodontics is the branch of dentistry that deals with the restoration and maintenance of oral function by the replacement of missing teeth and other oral structures. Many dental restoration procedures, including dental implants, crowns, bridges and dentures, fall under the field of prosthodontics.
Endodontics is the area of dentistry that deals with the tooth pulp and the tissues surrounding the root of a tooth. Endodontic therapy (informally known as the “root canal”), the treatment of cracked teeth, and the treatment of dental trauma are all endodontic procedures.
Although root canal therapy is the stereotypically feared dental operation, it is relatively painless when done properly. When a tooth is considered so threatened by decay or trauma that future infection is inevitable, root canal therapy is advised. The procedure is relatively simple in concept. The dentist removes the nerve and other tissues from the pulp cavity and replaces them with filling material. Root canals need not be painful: pain is controlled with a local anesthetic during the procedure, and with pain medication after.
